Mows, LMRacer Build #1 Lawn Mower Racing Racer Tractor Make Track race

July 23rd, 2010 · 25 Comments

mowerspeedracer asked:

See "Mows Ready for Test N Tune . . . . . . . . " for most recent modifications, supersedes the info below. ALSO see, Orange, LMRacer Build #2. Since THIS YouTube has been made, Mows has been lowered, seat has been lowered, and the Transaxle has also been race prepped and locked, see my other YouTube entries on lowering and tranny prep. This is a slide show of pics of a racing lawn mower build start to finish, basic Central Washington State style AKA Grass Roots style. I also disconnected the crankcase breather from the throat of the carb and ran it out the back of the frame with 1/2" tubing, I also plugged the hole in the throat of the carb with an expandable rubber plug, cuts down on interference of air flow in the throat of the carb as well. There no longer is a puke tank, an engine in much better condition has since been installed. I have just finished installing a Briggs 12.5hp 286707 series flat head, put an exhaust valve spring, retainer and keepers on the intake valve (have to modfy the valve stem), an adjustable main jet needle in the Walbro LMT 37 carb, opened up the air cleaner housing, opened up the exhaust, all so the engine could breath better, adjusted the valve clearance to the max spec for that engine, run the best 10W-40 synthetic oil I can get. All this since the Spring '09 race (posted on my channel under Doublewide Super Speedway) where I had a bad, split, rubber sparkplug cap that kept shorting out on acceleration on the 11hp I had in it at the time ...

@jdar3888 Thanks for the suggestion. Because Mows now has a jack shaft the 6 on the jackshaft to 6 on the tranny is now 6 on the jackshaft to 4 on the tranny I may have actually geared it to high. It does have 13×6.5×6 on the front now, big difference. Hope to do a test and tune soon. Be sure to check out my most recent video “Mows Ready for Test N Tune . . . . . . . . ” Mows is completely changed to what you see here, an evolution of sorts.

move your tensioner behind your brake rod and u can use a bigger front pulley. i only say that because more traction on your belt is always better. also carlisle makes 13×6.5×6 tires to get lower in the front.

@omaxx12 I am not familiar with the 15 OHV, anyway take out the link between the throttle and the governor, hook directly to the throttle, and yes you may blow it up, fresh high quality oil will make it last a little longer. Don’t rev it when it isnt in gear, sure as heck you will blow it.

There generally is a snap ring, sometimes have to dig for it, take it off. Then soak with PJ Blaster for a few days, keep applying and good luck.

Just a guess, but I’m thinking 5 on the engine 4 on the tranny. 4 and 4 might even work well.

@mowerspeedracer i Live ona dead end road so i want a little bit of speed but we also have 7 acres to play around on which is hilly , i’ll be keeping the rear end in it with the four speed and reverse. I’d like to be able to go through the woods and up hills with no problems but as i said, open it up open the flat ground.

i have the same mower but with no engine. I have the chance for a 20HP vertical shaft , horizontal pulley. What size pulleys should i run on the rear and front?

Not sure. just have to get a hold of one of each, see how many times you have to turn the input shaft for the wheel axle to go round once

hey, do you know if a 3 speed transaxle is just as fast as a 5 speed? is the largest gear the same size it both? Only the 5 speed just has more gears between or what?

    @tracklessgreen
Since we run a fairly tight road course and want to stay on the power curve it is geared to top out about 30 mph. See my vid of Orange on the track, Mows was running badly at the time, but gives you an idea of what our course looks like.

Nothing is original about the steering column, it is 7/8″ cold rolled steel, sleeves and large washers I got at a farm implement dealer. The bicycle handle bars have been welded to a portion of a bicycle fork tube, then bolted to the steering column with two grade 8 1/4″ bolts with nylock nuts. The mower has been converted to direct steering for racing purposes. Review the video clip, maybe pause it and check out the steering more closely.

hey man just kind of wondering how you went about putting those handlebars on it….are they just bike handlebars welded onto the original shaft?

That hood latch proved to be real stupid, and failed. If you watch my “Lawn Mower (Tractor) Racer Stand winter racing Grass Roots” just recently posted you will see a rubber strap hooked cross the top of the hood.

Where did you get your hood latch from? Does it have a technical name?

Mows has gone through many changes since this YouTube was made. On the upper right click on the blue (more info) to read an updated full explanation. Just recently the original tranny was replaced with a race prepped 6 speed.

Nice job on the looks. I really like the handle bar ideal and the over all color looks really cool. Thanks for taking the time to show it of.

I don’t recall. It is Production Music I purchased from Music 2 Hues, part of their Rock Guitar collection. Go to their web site and you can listen to samples. It is expensive cause it is also royalty free once purchased, designed for the entertainment industry.
